Background
Every culture known to man includes music as part of its identity and for many races, music has been a key part of their oral history, a way to tell the stories of their people and culture. Inspired by national Harmony Day, which celebrate Australia's success as a diverse society, In Harmony is a community participation event for everyone who likes to sing!
In Harmony promotes social and cultural understanding by sharing vocal music from different regions of the world with interested singers and choirs. Through workshops led by featured ethnic choirs, participants learn about other musical cultures, learn new vocal skills working with different conductors and learn new music in its native language to perform as part of the massed In Harmony Choir. The final event, a public concert, showcases the feature choirs, guest artists and the In Harmony choir.
At the inaugural event in 2008 we exceeded all expectation with 170 registered participants. The written and oral feedback from this event was ‘can we do this every year?’.
