Lőke (meaning a campfire or bonfire and pronounced lurk-e, with the e as in egg) is a small choir formed in 1997 that focuses on vocal music from Estonia.
Singing is an integral part of the Estonian culture, as evidenced by the Estonian Song Festival (held in Estonia every five years), which attracts mass choirs of 20,000-30,000 people and incorporates traditional Estonian folk songs that are closely connected with old customs and traditions, as well as the more modern, highly acclaimed Estonian choral music.
Lőke performs regularly at functions organised within the Sydney Estonian community and has also performed at various multicultural events in Sydney and Canberra.
Performance highlights within the last five years include the National Folk Festival in Canberra (2005), the Wollondilly Older Women’s Network Multicultural day (2005), the opening of an exhibition at the Wollondilly Heritage Centre entitled “From Estonia to Thirlmere: Stories from a unique community”, the opening of an exhibition in the Powerhouse Museum entitled “Our new home: Estonian-Australian stories” (2006), the opening of Harmony Park in Surry Hills (2006), the Older Women’s Network annual conference (2005-2007) and Nordfest (2005-2009).
